This project involved the rebirth of the converted “garage granny flat”. We have all seen the approved dual-occupancy-converted-garage-granny-flat. They are much prized, in the inner city particularly, as another housing option for people of all ages. This one was typical of its type, crudely converted with the original garage slab still falling towards the in-filled garage door, minimal windows and flat roof but approved! The owner’s brief was to build a solar passive “pad” for him, and possibly another, to enjoy in retirement.

My one-man pad grew out of a grotty flat that grew out of a backyard garage. I love its comfort and efficient use of space and the way bits of sunlight and unexpected glimpses of the moon come in through quirky windows. It’s really warm and snug in winter and easily cooled overnight in summer when the grapes are fruiting on the deciduous eave. Bonuses from the Solamit ceiling, cork flooring and bagged brick wall sections are the slightly blokey feel of the place and good acoustics.

This work involved demolishing the northern half of the old flat, extending approximately 3 metres and re-pitching a new roof up towards the north. The old bathroom was retained for budgetary reasons but a new living area, kitchen bedroom and study were added. Maximum energy efficiency was achieved by high levels of insulation, Trombe walls, deciduous eaves, double glazing and high levels of thermal mass. As a retiree, the owner was also determined to have low maintenance.
