Rural Country Home
Imaginative use of metal roofing turned this rural retreat into a three dimensional sculpture that integrates with its environment while providing a comfortable, functional home for a modern family lifestyle.
Located near Queanbeyan in the ACT, the house uses passive solar technology to provide year-round comfort in a cold and windy climate.
It is carefully sited in relation to its surrounds and to the sunrise and sunset points of the winter solstice.
Architect Anna Pender made several site visits with the owners before the design phase, including inspections at the equinox and winter solstice to ensure the design took full advantage of available sunlight.
A colour scheme was chosen to reflect the rock, bark and soil on the site, while forms were developed to complement the surrounding topography. The roof, in plan, was inspired by the shape of a moth.
