Horton Eco House

The client’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency with no compromise on quality of space has given the architects a rich canvas to work with.

The design for this new residence, located on a property north of Canberra, is an evolution of a repetitious geometry frozen in the land to form dynamic and changing space as an extension of the site conditions. The house is oriented 10 deg east of true north, and has a large curved thermal mass wall to the south buried 1.5m into the sloping ground to protect from the ground frosts and improve the geothermal contact with the constant sub-surface temperatures found below the natural ground.

The infrastructure of the house will rely on self sufficient systems, including energy consumption which will be via an array of solar panels and a battery storage system. The house is currently under construction and is due for completion in May/June 2009.
